alarms, contextMenus, tabs and host permissions
Alarms can schedule filter update checks. Context menus support quick actions. Tabs identify the active site for controls. Host permissions allow Shieldly to apply ad blocking, tracker blocking, cosmetic cleanup and page protection on websites you visit.
Connect page access to visible cleanup
To remove supported overlays and advertising elements, the extension needs access to the pages where that work happens. A browser permission describes a capability; it does not by itself describe every data practice. Read both the installation prompt and the privacy policy. If you restrict site access, expect cleanup to be unavailable on pages outside that scope. Test on a normal website rather than an internal browser page.
Understand network and privacy capabilities
Network-rule capabilities allow the browser to apply filtering rules. Privacy controls can support features such as the WebRTC setting, subject to browser availability and control policy. Local storage keeps configuration and counters available between sessions. These capabilities have different roles, so changing one permission should not be expected to reproduce the effect of every protection toggle. Diagnostics can help distinguish a missing capability from a page-specific rule issue.
Review access after changing browsers or profiles
A configuration import does not establish that the destination browser granted the same permissions. Inspect the extension details in that browser and check whether an administrator or another extension controls a relevant setting. If a feature is unavailable, report the browser version and the permission or control status. Do not disable browser security protections merely to make an installation prompt disappear; use the normal supported installation flow.
Frequently asked questions
Does page access mean my browsing history is uploaded?
A permission is not itself evidence of an upload. Consult the privacy policy for data practices and review any report you choose to export or share.
Why does filtering not run on a browser settings page?
Browsers restrict extension access to certain internal and protected pages. Those pages are not suitable tests of ordinary site filtering.
